The Planet Vatan

The world of Vatan is considerably larger than the planet Earth. It has a circumference of around 65,000 kilometres (40k miles) to Earth’s 40,000 (25k miles). It is substantially less
dense than Earth, however, making the gravity almost identical at 1.000001G. The area of the planet is a little less than 1.35 million square kilometres (521k square miles). Earth is around half a million square kilometres (190k square miles). This means that there is about 2.7 times as much area on Vatan as Earth.

In total, the area usable by human like species is about twice that of planet Earth. This is because the poles are covered in vastly larger icecaps than Earth, with the temperature being so extremely cold near the poles that it’s impossible for standard humans to survive, with average temperatures below negative a hundred degrees centigrade (-148F). The region around the equator is the opposite. It is far too hot for substantial life to exist with midday temperatures in summer in excess of one hundred degrees centigrade (+212F). These large uninhabitable areas mean that the actual habitable space on the planet of Vatan is perhaps about twice that of Earth. The climate distribution is such that the northern hemisphere has no contact whatsoever with the southern hemisphere, which means there is roughly an Earth sized world’s
worth of area in each hemisphere. Of course this area includes seas, but the percentages of sea vs. land are roughly comparable to Earth

Alagariel’s story and most other tales of Vatan take place in the Northern hemisphere either on the continent of Taldyr or its immediate surroundings. The Northlands also hosts some of the stories, it is an area that is very cold and even its southern reaches are completely snow covered in winter while the north is covered in a thick ice pack and the Northlands become too cold for human survival the closer you get to the pole.

Far south of Aqaba you eventually get to areas where the temperatures are also too hot for humans to cross to the southern hemisphere. There are species on Vatan that live underground however, so there may be tales that feature the southern hemisphere at some point too.

Humans go where they can of course, so some do travel far to the north and towards the equator when the weather permits. These expeditions are typically in search of resources. In the north, these are things like exotic hides, though there are rumours of caves where gems are easily picked up by the bucket load. In the south, there are also some species of lizard and reptile adapted to the extreme heat that
are sought after for their hides. Some exotic metals can also easily be found closer to the equator. These resources make it worth braving the inhospitable conditions on both ends of the scale.

I have had some thoughts about tales where Aqaba, Otroya and Sharq play a larger role, but they are in the book nr 10 and beyond sort of area considering how much already written material that I still want to make suitable for publishing.
